When a variable product appears unavailable, first check the exact variation the customer selected. A missing price, incorrect stock state, unmatched attributes or a failing variation request can look like the same storefront problem.
Separate a product-data problem from a broken selector
Open one affected product and write down the exact attribute combination, such as size and colour. Compare it with a combination that works. Is the option absent, selectable but unavailable, or selectable with an Add to cart button that does nothing? Those are different failures. Record the product URL and whether the behaviour changes between a logged-in session and a private window.
Check the selected variation
In the product editor, confirm the variation exists, is enabled and has a regular price. Inspect its stock configuration as well as the parent product inventory. Check that the variation attributes match the choices exposed to customers. WooCommerce supports inventory at product and variation level, so an apparently healthy parent does not settle every availability question. See the official variable-product documentation for the supported data model.
Inspect the page interaction
If the data is correct, reproduce the selection while watching browser errors and the relevant network request. Some products expose variation data directly in the page; others require a request. A blocked request, a JavaScript exception or a theme override can stop the displayed state updating. Save the response status and error text without copying customer data or authentication tokens into a public ticket.
Test the smallest reversible change
Use a recoverable staging copy to compare the affected product with the default product template and to isolate variation-related customizations. Clear the relevant product and page caches after correcting product data. Do not recreate every variation as a first step: changing variation IDs can affect integrations, historical references or stock synchronization.
Verify the full purchase path
Test the previously failing combination, a working combination and a genuinely unavailable one. Confirm the correct image, price and inventory behaviour, then add the selected variation to the cart. Check quantity, cart contents and the checkout handoff. For an active store, agree on how any test order will be isolated from fulfilment and customer communications.
Questions about this problem
Should I delete and recreate the product?
Usually that is too broad a first step. Identify whether the fault is in variation data, the selector or the request before changing product identities.
Why does it work for an administrator?
Logged-in and anonymous visitors may receive different cache responses or scripts. Compare the same selection in both sessions before blaming stock settings.
